What You Nourish Will Flourish...make it so 🪄

October is when I tend to turn inward. Some years I listen when this October-y feeling visits, and some years I don't listen enough. Usually, I sense a soft hush that invites me to slow down and tend deeper. The sunlight bends differently now, painting the edges of leaves in gold and amber, and the wind carries a certain stillness that nudges me to notice the spaces between moments. I find myself leaning into those spaces, into the pauses, the small rhythms of ordinary life that often go overlooked. The hot cup of tea during an intensive with a couple, the moment of stirring warm soup on the stove, or being greeted by my beloved kittens in their search for more warmth.

Going from full activity mode of summer to softer and more spacious in the fall? HARD. Like swimming against the stream, like turning the Titanic around. It can be done, but not without effort or intention. The research on change and the brain shows us that neurons that fire together wire together. The more you do something…the more you'll do something. Our neural pathways get strengthened with repetition. This is neural plasticity in its simplest form: What you nourish will flourish. It is why it is easier to just keep doing what you are already doing; it is literally habituated. But…BUT…some of what is habituated is harmful to ourselves and those around us. Since we have the ability to actually adapt and evolve, why not?!

Let this letter be an invitation to notice what feels steady and capable within you, and to hold space for your intentions, practices, and the changes that are calling to you.

That's right, if you want things to slow down…make it so.

If you want to feel more connected…take an intentional pause and start the journey to connect with yourself, presence, and others. Make it so. Nourish different ways of being, feeling, and existing. Give permission and shake up those neural pathways!
